I am a professional engineer at a major Aerospace company based in Orange County. A big part of my job is to explain complex technical issues to people who are unfamiliar with the technology or whose jobs are outside of engineering. I have been doing this for over 10 years and know how to package information in a tailored way to specific audiences. I use the same approach when I tutor.
**Degree in Aeronautical Engineering**- Cal Poly San Luis Obispo**Experience in Tutoring**- I have tutored dozens of students over the years, ranging from 2nd grade to university-level calculus. Most of my tutoring has been concentrated in the areas of pre-algebra, algebra, pre-calculus and calculus**I have two high school kids taking AP Math now**
My Approach: Using a Tutor to Keep the Momentum . Most of the time this involves going through the homework or a previous test and to identify the areas of opportunity. Within the first 15 minutes the student and I have identified where we need to focus, and from then on we work together to keep the momentum going. The main roadblock for math is getting discouraged and losing momentum. The advantage of having a tutor is getting past the roadblocks and keeping the momentum. It saves time and frustration. I work with the student to understand where they are strong and where they need some extra help I have been tutoring for a number of years and I've noticed a disturbing trend: the students reach for a calculator as the first tool to solve a problem - instead of reaching for their brain! The increased capabilities of the latest generation of calculators only make the problem worse. My style of tutoring emphasizes the calculator as the Rely on your brain, not on a calculator.last tool the student uses. I use different ways to show the student that they can do it in their head - and often times it is faster. A bonus to using your brain first and the calculator last is that the student can tell if the answer the calculator is giving them "makes sense" with respect to the problem.
Subjects Just Math: I tutor only mathematics - it was the focus of my education and of my career. I have successfully tutored students in:
